Why Does a Roofer Need a Social Media Presence?

Non-sexy industries and the need for social.

It's a natural question for business owners in the important but not-so-sexy fields: plumbing, electrician work, roofing, pest control, heating and air; Why would I need social media? Why would my customers care?
It's a great question, and one that has a few answers.
1. Google likes it.
Since people no longer grab the phone book to look for these things, it's important to be where they look now: the search results. If you have an active social media presence, one that links to your website and shows that you're engaged with your industry and, more importantly, your customers and their feedback, Google will reward you with bonus points, which will help you move up the search rankings.
2. Legitimacy.
Many of these industries are services that customers will use once every few years or longer. This means that they might not necessarily remember who they used to replace their roof a decade ago or have moved in the 8 years since they had an HVAC unit installed. These are services that will cost customers a pretty penny and they will do their research. If they find a company who has a lackluster website and their last Facebook post was 2014, it gives a feeling of illegitimacy and that potential client will move on to the next company who is keeping up with the times.
3. Keeping Engaged with Customers.
The Joneses had a good experience with your company, and they felt encouraged to tell others. Great! They tagged you and three of their friends who also need a new roof may be inclined to click through to your page. Great! And because you post relevant content every so often, the next time the Joneses need a roof repair, they remember you because you periodically (but not too often!) show up in their feed. They remember their good experience, and you'll be their first call when the time comes.
Ultimately, your company--your brand--needs to feel like a living, breathing entity. Today, it's important to show up wherever your prospective customers may look for you, and that includes an active social media presence.
